Sebastian Interview...
full news image

Hi Sebastian, firstly, how and when did you start DJing? Was there ever any question you would do anything else or were you driven to the music industry from an early age?

When I was young I used to be a professional swimmer. I have earned about 10 National titles when I was between 12 and 18 years old. I was 12 when I broke a National Age Group Record and was even faster than former Olympic Champion Pieter van de Hoogenband! My future plans changed when I became an adolescent. ;-)

Your productions fuse the House, Breaks, Techno and Progressive genres to create a unique style that had made your much respected name, what were your early productions like compared to now? Have you explored many other genres of music in the studio?

Hmmm my very first releases were more like disco-sampled track. I started very late with producing compared to my 15 years dj experience. Producing music is something that can be very intriguing, but also it is something that can be very time consuming. It takes a lot of dedication and motivation from a person. Most of the professional music producers I knew when I was young have extensive imaginations and years and years of experience. I lived with the understanding that to start producing music you need thousands of dollars in equipment and you need to have gone to school or had some kind of schooling on producing music. Now I know this is totally untrue, but it took me long to discover! I even follow piano classes at the moment, just to improve my arrangements and melodies.

Who might you compare your sound to in the industry? Do you gain inspiration from many other DJs?

The sound of the first dutch Superstar-DJ Dimitri in the 90's was very inspiring for me. Dimitri was the man behind the legendary Roxy nights in Amsterdam, but also with a former residency at the now closed Twilo nightclub in New York, long before the likes of Sasha and Digweed came to the stage, has announced that 'enough is enough'.  It was the real sound of Amsterdam he played and produced. Im still in love with it!

Which new artists have you heard lately who have left an impression on you?

At the moment Pezzner and Gorge are in my cd wallet every weekend!

When given a new track to remix, how do you begin to approach it? Do you enjoy doing remixes and which of all you have done do you think most represents your own musical taste?

I enjoy them, but I absolutely need emotion in a tune. A nice vocals will help as well. Most times I only use one or two elements of the original and build something completely new. House is a feeling, and that works the same in the studio. :)

Which other artists would you like to see remix a track of your own?

Hmmm Joris Voorn or Audiofly would be quite cool!

You are playing next month at Bar 54 in Shoreditch alongside MidiDropMusic amongst others, are you familiar with their work at all? What do you think to the club scene in London?

Oh yeah i know these guys! Very talented and nice music mates! They feel like brothers! :-) We've just finished an EP together, soon out on 54 Music Light.

I've played about 4 times in London before, all good gigs! Well educated  and house minded party people! Always looking forward to come over and browse the streets .. I love that city!

What new tracks will be making an appearance in your set?

Let me surprise you!

And finally, what’s your summer looking like at the moment? Do you have any gigs lined up in Ibiza?

On productional level im currently working on an a few EP's together with fellow Dutchies like Estroe, Patch Park and Eelke Kleijn. Also working on remixes for Johan Ilves and Mike Monday. There's a few other ep's and remixes that are waiting to be released soon. And last but not least of course DJing here, there and everywhere! Tunesia, Spain and the UK are coming up next! Unfortunately no Ibiza yet!
