Owain K – Tall Cities EP

Get set for 54 Music Light's latest release as we welcome newcomer (and Light competition runner up) Producer/DJ - Owain K. Hailing from a musical family and encouraged to play both the violin & saxophone, Bristol born Owain draws on a variety of musical influences from Motown to Miles Davis via the like of Public Enemy and The Clash. An avid vinyl junkie and purveyor of wax, he continues to push and play wax where (humanly) possible, having recently released Ep’s on Loudeast & Elevation Recordings.

An antidote to current trendy based Minimal & Electro sounds, Tall Cities EP explores the gaps between traditional House and Techno with it's own story to tell. Tall Cities takes a dive deep into the chapters of House history, unearthing the styling’s of 51 Days classic “Paper Moon” for some serious head nodding action as a fusion of deep chords, pulsating 808 kick and haunting melodies take you back to a time when there was little divide between genres, let alone dancefloors.

Not to be outdone, D-Scope sets off play at mid tempo, fusing crisp percussion with a HUGE analogue bassline, having etched emotively laden pads to lift the mood as layer upon layer of melody builds across the spectrum and takes things to the next level.

Rounding off proceedings, we take a trip down chi-town lane with Past Times - a metronomic fusion of machine-punctuated beats. Swaying from front to back, this tech edged jam hits your hips as its layered stabs get lost in a whole world of dubbed out FX. Simple yet killer.

Bigger Than Jesus - Checkpoint Charlie EP
Checkpoint Charlie (Original)

Checkpoint Charlie (Victor Ruiz Remix)

This next release by 54 Music Dark is a fully versatile EP taking in a number of different Techno styles. Bigger Than Jesus are the chaps responsible for this brand new techno offering, ‘Checkpoint Charlie’. Max Cooper and Victor Ruiz support them with incredible remixes. Bigger Than Jesus are hitting ALL the right buttons at the moment and creating some of there own in the process.

As always Bigger Than Jesus rip down your wall of consciousness, kick out the jam’s and set your libido on fire. Grinding, pulsating overtones ride over throbbing bass, whilst tense chords waltz and dance around powerfully and paranoid, thus creating a powerful vacuum of techno, which eventually spits you out into the light. It is clear that there is messing around on this production but the music still evokes, and stirs... conjuring up strong visual dialogue amongst the listener. Checkpoint Charlie brings you a tail of a cold reality, a want and desire to find escapism.

Max Cooper's remix takes the dance floor percussion of the original and twists it into a broken beat techno monster. Plenty of Cooper's trademark glitch delays and long builds create lingering suspense which is finally broken at the last drop by some wobbly-bass mayhem!
Victor Ruiz’s interpretation brings further fuel and dynamics to the mix, bountiful of energy as boundless driving rhythms lash against a cacophony of sounds. Hypnotic, appealing and catchy... just how great techno should sound!
